DOOMED LOVERS

Is Roslin the Fifth? Our multiple sets of doomed lovers contemplate their fates as the face of evil is unmasked and what the Five mean to the Cylons becomes critical to the survival of all. Unrest grows among the people of the fleet.

EXT. TEMPLE OF AURORA - MIDNIGHT
CAPRICA SIX, BALTAR, ROSLIN, TIGH, TORY, ANDERS, and TYROL stand upon the stone floor of what remains of the temple, a faint stencil of a design in gold barely visible beneath their feet. There is shock and confusion on their faces, as well as on the faces of those down below on the ground near the temple foundation wall looking up at the eight people higher up. ADAMA, LEE, ZAREK, KARA, LEOBEN,
SHARON, D'ANNA and the Colonial Marine contingent seem dumbstruck.

ROSLIN
What is that sound? Do you hear it?

A distant ECHOING DISEMBODIED VOICE seems to hum a hypnotic note and all on the temple floor seem to hear it and react. No one down below seems to hear it.

ADAMA POV as he looks up at Roslin - who is looking back at him, both of whom seem bewildered. Suddenly he notices that she seems to be fading from view slowly from bottom to top. Light in the sky above grows brighter and all look - the moons have lined up in the now clear sky and are catching the light of the beta sun about to rise - casting an erie glow. Static charges arc through the sky.
CUT TO:

INT. ATHENA'S QUARTERS - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
ATHENA is in bed sleeping, HERA is in bed next to her sitting up wide awake. Hera looks down at Athena, an empty soulless look on her face.
CUT TO:

INT. GALACTICA - C&C - CONTINUOUS
GAETA is frantic at his console.

GAETA
Captain, there is a massive energy fluctuation along the atmosphere above the landing area.

HELO
What is it?

Helo comes over to Gaeta's station.

GAETA
The moons, all four of them, have lined up over the southern hemisphere - probably the sort of thing that happens once a century - and a charged particle stream is passing beneath them - arcing back-and-forth in the atmosphere.

HELO
Is it a danger to the people down below?

GAETA
I don't know. I've never seen anything like it.

HELO
Dee, get me our people down there.

DUALLA works her console and seems frustrated.

DUALLA
Captain, there is massive interference. We can't send or receive.

HELO
Ready two Raptors immediately.

GAETA
Sir, this charged particle 'cloud' or conduit isn't going to last much longer - the moons will drift apart in less than an hour. I think the interference will subside after that.

HELO
Delay that order.

Helo seems frustrated and pensive.
CUT TO:

EXT. TEMPLE RUINS - CONTINUOUS
All those on the ground level notice that all of the people up on the temple floor seem to be vanishing into thin air - and an eerie purple glow begins to light up the sky above them -with discharges firing off toward the ground, and suddenly a large arc coalesces into a massive arc of purple-white electricity that descends onto the gathering of people on the temple floor. A BRIGHT FLASH and CRACKLE sounds and in a puff of smoke they are gone.

ADAMA
Laura!

He and the others scramble to the temple floor and see a blackened scar on the pentagon image - which now looks more like a pentagram. They are baffled at the disappearance of the others.
CUT TO:

INSERT: OPERA HOUSE DREAM SEQUENCE (CONTINUED) - Baltar stands at the door, and Six scoops up Hera into her arms and they enter the main auditorium, but this time they stop and turn to look at Athena and their faces are sinister, and so is Hera's. END INSERT.

INT. ATHENA'S QUARTERS - CONTINUOUS
ATHENA bolts awake, in a flop-sweat, and turns to see HERA sitting right over her - her face an emotionless blank – frightening Athena.
CUT TO:


INT. TEMPLE OF AURORA – CONTINUOUS
BALTER, CAPRICA SIX, ROSLIN, TIGH, TYROL, ANDERS and TORY find themselves within the complete and furnished temple. It is dimly lit with candles and oil lamps and the stencil pattern on the floor can now clearly be seen - it is a pentagon shape with a pentagram within it and filled with astrological symbols and they all stand within it - seemingly bound there within the design – the atmosphere surrounding them seems to ripple gently. The lights reveal flickers of imagery: red curtains draped in places, stone pillars, sculptures, inscriptions, alcoves, and in the distance at the far end of the temple, near a small riser for an altar, the faintest outline of a reclining figure sitting on a stone bench, draped in a ceremonial robe can be seen in the flickers of candlelight.

IBLIS (VO)
My children -

The BOOMING VOICE comes from the darkness and fires like a shot from a gun - reverberating off the temple walls. They all seem startled by it.

IBLIS (VO)
At last you have found me ... my patience and hard work have finally been rewarded.

The robed figure moves with strange speed, stopping and starting as if time itself were stopping and starting. In an instant the voice and the man is standing next to them just outside the pentagon design. They look upon his face and we see the reactions - all are astonished, it is the face of one them.

It is the face of ....

Gaius Baltar.

Lord Iblis is Baltar.

Roslin screams. As Iblis leans in close, his eyes are sinister and he exudes evil. Yet he is charming and graceful like a cat. As he speaks his VOICE FADES IN AND OUT, it is hard and sharp or soft and soothing - it seems out-of-time somehow - as if he speaks from beyond a membrane of time.

IBLIS
Are you here my angel? My archangel?

HEAD SIX/ARCHANGEL
I am here.

Stepping out of shadow behind Iblis, HEAD SIX rests her head on his shoulder from behind and stares straight ahead into the eyes of Baltar.

HEAD SIX/ARCHANGEL
Hello Gaius. Cat got your tongue?

ROSLIN
Who is that woman?

BALTAR
You can see her?

TIGH
We all can see her.

HEAD SIX/ARCHANGEL
I told you that you would learn something very important tonight. And now you know.

BALTAR
I am the Fifth? I am the Final Cylon?

IBLIS (booming laughter)
You fool. You are but an empty vessel. Where are your followers?

Baltar looks confused.

IBLIS (to Head Six/Archangel)
He has followers?

HEAD SIX/ARCHANGEL
Yes. Up there.

IBLIS
Ah, we have a vessel?

HEAD SIX/ARCHANGEL
Many.

IBLIS (to Baltar)
Give me your hand and you will know the truth.

Iblis reaches out to Baltar, putting his hand into the wavy atmospheric zone between realms - bounded by the pentagon image on the floor. Baltar reaches out but hesitates.

CAPRICA SIX
Gaius don't.

TYROL
No!

It is too late, Baltar has reached his hand out just enough that Iblis grabs it and they lock their hands around each other's wrists. Caprica Six instinctively grabs Baltar and Head Six/Archangel is already embracing Iblis. The four of them begin to glow and morph into one-another.

IBLIS
I am free! After thousands of years of exile I am free!

A flash of light overwhelms Tigh, Tyrol, Roslin, Tory and Anders and then it instantly subsides. Baltar, Iblis, Caprica Six and Head Six/Archangel are gone. The remaining five are alone in the temple and their bodies relax and they almost fall apart from one another - no longer bound within the pentagram/pentagon astrological design – the wavy atmosphere is gone.

ROSLIN
Oh my gods.

Tigh gently grabs hold of Roslin's arms.

TIGH
You're the Fifth, Laura.

ANDERS
We're more than that. We're the Lords of Kobol.

TYROL
And do you know who we just freed?

TORY
The Fallen One - Lord Iblis. How can I know that?

ROSLIN
It's all real, every word of the ancient scriptures.

TORY
We have been masquerading as human all this time in order to find him.

TIGH
And destroy him. That is our mission. I feel it with every fiber of my being.

Tigh moves as if to step outside the floor design, the human military man in him wanting to get to the task at had, Roslin and Anders stop him.

ROSLIN
I've been in a place like this before - at the Temple of Athena on Kobol. We must stand here in order to get back. We don't dare leave this symbol. Don't move.
CUT TO:

EXT. TEMPLE RUINS – CONTINUOUS
Another flash of light as a purplish arc descends again to the temple floor and knocks a couple of Colonial Marines from the raised floor to the ground and Adama, D'Anna, Leoben, Six, Kara, Lee, Sharon - all are knocked unconscious.

Emerging from the flash of light are two people: BALTAR/IBLIS [now to referred to as Iblis] and CAPRICA SIX/HEAD SIX/ARCHANGEL [now to be referred to as ARCHANGEL]. They quickly dismount the temple floor to the ground, surveying the surroundings and the unconscious people around them and run back toward the ships - laughing.
CROSSFADE

EXT. TEMPLE RUINS - LATER - The reddish beta sun is rising giving morning light and the moons overhead have all moved and are going out of alignment. A final weak discharge of current descends to the temple floor and in a slight puff of smoke ROSLIN, TIGH, TORY, ANDERS and TYROL reappear. They quickly step down to ground level.

ROSLIN
We need to wake them.

In the distance the SOUND of a Raptor taking off and heading back to orbit can be heard.

TIGH
I'll go after him.

ROSLIN
Wait. We must stay together. Sam, touch him.

Anders leans down and touches Adama's face and he wakens and seems refreshed, blinking his eyes in confusion. Roslin leans down and kisses Adama on the head.

ROSLIN
It's all right Bill. I'm here.

TORY
How did you?

ROSLIN
Start to remember who you are.
(to Tory and Tyrol)
You two, whatever held him here is in the stones of that temple. Find it. Maybe it's the design.

Tory and Tyrol scramble back up onto the temple floor and start looking around, using superhuman strength to turn over large fitted stones.

Anders is going one-by-one and reviving the others with his touch. D'Anna and Sharon and Six react with astonishment, knowing what it means. Leoben seems less surprised. Zarek is next and seems to have had a profound religious experience due to Anders' touch. Kara is last; Anders gently puts both hands - one on each side of Kara's face as his touch revives her. She opens her eyes with wonder.

KARA
Oh my gods. I died. (gasps) My body lies back there.

Leoben steps forward and takes Kara's hand in his.

LEOBEN
And I was there when you needed me.

KARA
At the vortex.

LEOBEN
Yes.

Kara stands and looks to the others and drops to one knee, her head bowed, tears of joy start streaming from her eyes.

KARA
Admiral Adama, Lee. Standing before us are the Lords of Kobol.

Adama stands and looks at Kara as if she's lost her mind, but then looks at Six, Sharon, Leoben, Anders and D'Anna to his right, Tyrol and Tory up on the temple floor, and Tigh and Roslin to his left. His mouth falls agape as he realizes it's true.

ROSLIN
I am the Fifth, Bill. And that's the good news.
CROSSFADE:

INT. PROMETHEUS – DAY
The Colonial Raptor they stole from the surface of Alpha Centauri Prime has docked on the hangar deck and steam is streaming up from below it as it's door opens and deckhands gather around, a couple with firearms. IBLIS (Baltar) and ARCHANGEL (Caprica Six) emerge. A young acolyte of Baltar's rushes forward. A small crowd gathers and pushes in.

CROWD MEMBER
That's one of the Skin-jobs!

ACOLYTE
Doctor Baltar!

IBLIS
That's Lord Ibli-

Archangel covers his lips from speaking with her index finger. In the background the deckhands and interested strangers are looking over the Raptor.

DECKHAND #1
This is from Galactica - one their better ones looks like.

DECKHAND #2
But no Colonial pilot with these two.

IBLIS (Cont.)
Baltar, yes, I am here. What is it my child?

ACOYLYTE
I know a safe place.

A SHADY MERCHANT accosts Iblis an stops them from going.

SHADY MERCHANT
Hang on a minute. You have to pay for passage onto the Prometheus.

Iblis and Archangel look to one-another smugly.

IBLIS
There's your payment. You can have that. Divide it up how you like.

ARCHANGEL
Is it enough to buy silence about our presence here?

The crowd mutters yes it is.

IBLIS
And safe passage off the ship when we've concluded our business.

It is agreed. The acolyte takes them through a side-door from the landing deck.
CUT TO:


INT. GALACTICA - C&C – CONTINUOUS
HELO, DUALLA, ATHENA, SEELIX, HOSHI, and a couple of other C&C personnel are looking over a clear map on the light-table of the terrain from the planet below. Helo has his finger on the coordinates within a terrain relief map. GAETA hops over on his crutches and joins them.

GAETA
All channels are still dead. The interference is over. It looks like all their com systems are down.

HELO
What about that Raptor that came up?

DUALLA
It has no transponder ping and it flared its engines once it got between ships in the fleet – to hide where it went, but we think it docked with either the Astral Queen, Prometheus or this cargo transport - they're grouped together.

HELO
What the hell is going on? Any answer from those ships?

DUALLA
They all report negative.

HELO (frustrated)
I don’t think there’s a one of those ships that would give us an honest answer.

GAETA
That’s the core of the black market activity – that cluster of ships.

HELO
Are the Raptors ready?

DUALLA
Prepped and ready-to-go.

HELO
It's well over an hour since they were due to check in and coms are down, we have to assume something went wrong.

DUALLA
The Base Ship is reporting communications blackout as well. I relayed your request that any expedition to the planet be done jointly. They’ve refused.

C&C COMS OFFICER
Sir, Base Ship is launching two Heavy Raiders toward the planet surface.

HELO
So much for cooperation. Lt. Gaeta, you're in charge. If any other Cylon vessels jump into the area you are to immediately jump the fleet away from here and to the safety coordinates. Do you understand?

GAETA
Yes, Sir.

HELO
We don't know what's happened down there, if anyone is dead or injured. Let's go. Tell Doc Cottle to be ready for injured.
CUT TO:

EXT. PLANET SURFACE - BEACH - LANDING AREA – MORNING
D'ANNA, LEE, SHARON, SIX, and a couple of COLONIAL MARINES are looking over the Cylon Heavy Raider and the remaining Colonial Raptor - all have been trashed inside and cannot function - either to communicate or take off.

LEE
They did a very thorough job of it.

D'Anna is looking at the side of the Cylon Heavy Raider's "head" and it has been shot and killed.

D'ANNA
Shot from behind. They must be worried that the Raiders and Centurions can recognize them.

LEE (motions)
The scanning light?

D'Anna pats the Cylon Heavy Raider on its side.

D'ANNA
These beasts are more primitive versions of our form of Cylon, but their interface with their surroundings - this scanning eye - doesn't miss anything. In some ways it's more sophisticated than what these bodies can do.

LEE
Galactica should be sending down a couple of Raptors - we've missed our rendezvous time.

SIX (points)
A Heavy Raider is already en route.

D'Anna looks to the partially cloudy sky and nods affirmatively. Without consulting any kind of time-piece, she says:

D'ANNA
Right on time.

LEE
You can see it?

D'ANNA
These eyes can do more than yours. In a few minutes you'll see it too.

D’Anna pulls Lee aside, away from the others and they stand near the water’s edge.

D’ANNA (Cont.)
I must apologize to you. I just wanted to keep Laura safe, that’s why I wanted her close. Our quest is now united. We have a common enemy in Lord Iblis. He will sew more unrest and more destruction than you can imagine. We must find him quickly.

LEE
The Fallen One, from the Lords of Kobol.

D’ANNA
That’s right.

LEE
And what about Earth?

D’ANNA
Earth will have to wait. Until we’ve dealt with Iblis. And Cavil has to be brought over to our side. We need all the other Lords of Kobol, including the Fours, the Fives and the Ones before we can destroy Iblis.

LEE
How did a war between man and machine evolve into a war between the gods?

D’ANNA (cast a wry smile)
It’s a bit complicated. When we were touched by Anders – the member of the Five known for his healing touch - it restored long-lost knowledge. It’s hazy as yet, incomplete. We are rediscovering ourselves and these bodies we occupy are only part of who we are.

LEE
We should report back to the others.
CUT TO:

EXT. TEMPLE RUINS – CONTINUOUS
ADAMA, ROSLIN, KARA, LEOBEN, TYROL, TIGH, and TORY are milling about. Kara looks with concern back in the direction past her Viper. Approaching from beyond the temple are LEE and D’ANNA.

D’ANNA
There is a Heavy Raider here to retrieve us, and we’ve communicated with Galactica via our Raider and they’re sending two Colonial Raptors – which are en route presently.

LEE
Did you find what you were looking for?

TYROL
We’re not sure, but we think this is a device (holds it up) that interacts with the substance that made up that design. We scraped off as much of this shiny material as we could get.

ADAMA
Putting our heads together we surmised that somehow it was a prison. Lord Iblis was marooned here as a prisoner.

LEOBEN
This destruction could have happened before he was interred here or during – we have no way of knowing.

Beyond the Viper landing area a Colonial Marine hollers out.

MARINE #1
Admiral, you should see this!

Adama, Lee and some of the others move to go look. Kara physically blocks Lee and Adama.

KARA
Lee! Admiral. Don’t go. Please.

Leoben steps forward.

LEOBEN
You don’t need to go look. It’s her original body. Her body that died in the crash you saw in that vortex, Lee. I retrieved it, and I grew her another in one of our tanks. I did this secretly.

SIX
That’s sacrilege.

LEOBEN
It’s not like it matters now. What we used to believe.

Kara is dumbstruck – speechless and horrified.

LEE
So she’s not a Cylon.

LEOBEN
Kara, your body is blank – a Cylon model like me, but everything else about you is human. I saved all that I could. [Revised 1/9]

Kara can’t wrap her mind around this.

KARA
You grew me?! (now raging) What is your obsession with me Leoben?!!?

LEOBEN
Kara. I’m your father.

In a flash Kara sees a jumble of images in her mind of her mother from the perspective of a little girl. In a hazy memory she sees a blurry figure of a man leaving his mother’s embrace and focuses on his face – it is Leoben.

Kara feints.

D’ANNA
This is getting to be like a Geminese soap opera

Adama steps forward.

ADAMA
I think now is the time I’d like a little more explanation. You’re machines.
You’re gods. You’re our enemies. You’re our allies. You were once
our servants, and now, I guess, you’re our masters.

Roslins steps over to Adama and attempts to take his arm. He recoils and stares at her. She persists, and he allows it.

ROSLIN
Bill. Bill. We’ve all been used. All of us.

TIGH
By an exceptionally evil man.

ADAMA
Man?

D’ANNA
In one respect, he is a man.

ROSLIN
Lord Iblis – who now occupies the body of the one we’ve known as Baltar,
wants absolute power. That’s what all of this has been about. The Cylons,
the wars – our becoming trapped in a technological prison of these machine bodies
for eons – it’s all been his design. He upset the balance of nature, the balance of
harmony on Kobol. I don’t remember it all yet, but Iblis must be stopped.

TIGH
He must be destroyed.

LEOBEN
That may not be possible.

CROSSFADE

EXT. SPACE – CAVIL GIANT BASE SHIP
We see several Cylon Base ships attach to a growing cluster of Base Ships, the process seems almost done and the amalgamated vessel is vast and menacing – it’s form a black mass of spikes. CUT TO:

INT. CAVIL GIANT BASE SHIP – CONTINUOUS
Cavil turns down a corridor and finds Boomer alone in a room, doing one of her naked dances. Cavil watches her for a moment.

CAVIL
And where are you now?

BOOMER
I am on the top of a magnificent waterfall

We now see what Boomer is projecting in her mind – a warm sunset in the distance illuminates her as she balances on the very edge of wet rocks of an impossibly high gently waterfall.

CAVIL
There won’t be much time for such flights of fantasy from now on. I’m going to
put the rest of the recovered Centurions and Hybrids in line, care to join me?

BOOMER
You’re the only one of us that doesn’t project. Why not?

CAVIL
You know, not one of you – any model – has ever asked me that until now.

BOOMER
Aren’t you capable of it?

CAVIL
Somebody needs to mind the store.

With that Cavil turns on his heel and is gone. Boomer looks after him with a skeptical look.

CUT TO:

INT. CAVIL GIANT BASE SHIP – CENTURION AREA
Into a great oval hall walks Cavil from one of many side entrances. Arrayed along the walls are rows of Centurion Cylons – standing at the ready. Cavil goes to the center of the vast room and addresses them.

CAVIL
You are the remaining Centurion models I did not have repurposed. I, or those from my model line, have spoken the words to each of you and now you are loyal soldiers again. Now you are with purpose again. You know your mission again. Just in case I missed any of you I shall repeat the words.

Cavil opens his mouth and out streams a high-pitched sonic assault of computer-language which ends almost as abruptly as it began.

CAVIL (CONTINUED)
There now, are we all on the same page?

His eye is drawn to his left, toward the back rows of one collection of Centurions. Other Centurions models react as three Centurions are having erratic spasms – their red-roving eyebeams fluttering.

CAVIL (CONT.)
Destroy them. And put their parts in the core.

The surrounding Centurions close in on the last three rebel Centurions and rip them to pieces. Cavil leaves.

CROSSFADE

INT. COLONIAL RAPTOR – DAY
Adama sits pensively across from Roslin, Tigh beside her. Two Galactica pilots sit in the front as the vessel leaves the atmosphere back toward space and Galactica.

ADAMA
I’m not sure why you wanted to come back to the Galactica.

ROSLIN
Bill, it’s important to do this the right way. (quietly) The people can’t know yet – the
discord will work to his favor. The people will sense our presence soon enough and then
it will help. In these next few hours we must find Ibl –

TIGH
(motions to the pilots trying to listen)
Baltar

ROSLIN
Baltar and isolate him.

TIGH
He can’t get to Ares before we do.

ADAMA
Ares?

TIGH
Did I say Ares? I meant Cavil.

ADAMA
Once we’re back on Galactica we’ll pull together those we can trust
and make a plan. Pilot, where did Galactica say they saw that Raptor
from the surface go?

PILOT
The best vector they had on it was the Astral Queen and
Prometheus.

ROSLIN
The black market hub, of course.

TIGH
(quietly) We may have to destroy all those vessels.

ROSLIN
He may have already moved on. We could be killing innocents.
We have to find him.
